How to Keep Your Sleep Schedule During the Holidays

You are having great conversation, a family story was shared, and all you wish is for the clock to forget about tomorrow. Maintaining your sleep routine throughout the holiday season implies carving out space for these enjoyable evenings while looking towards tomorrow. The Sleep Reset Blueprint enables you to assess the hours prior to your bedtime and includes the household chores that keep it waiting.

There is joy in spending time with those whom you don’t see often. I would not want all events to be measured by the stopwatch. However, affection enjoys an easier morning routine when the person whose night has been disturbed by talk is given sufficient rest before being woken up to cook breakfast.

Consider the following morning first

Look behind the invitation to tomorrow. Are you supposed to drive someone to the airport, start a shift, or open the kitchen doors to visitors? What looks feasible to do by eight may look quite different when its consequences show up at six. Consider travel and preparation time while counting the hours.

The NHLBI suggests seven to nine hours of sleep for adults. Take into account your own usual needs as well. Should the planned evening leave you with only five hours in bed, enthusiasm won’t make up for the lost time. Consider whether a morning duty can be rescheduled or shared before anyone commits to another round of stories.

Such a suggestion will be friendlier than going to bed angry and hoping that someone will notice why. The request made in the afternoon leaves people free to help when they are still in their right mind.

Keep familiar timing without turning it into a test

Healthy sleep according to NHLBI suggests similar bedtimes and waking-up times, with weekend differences of no more than an hour. Familiar timing adds continuity to the season. Don’t allow one celebration to quietly turn into ten late nights.

Pick out the events which are really important for you. Maybe your visiting sister deserves a long chat, while the third film can wait. A flexible plan will become useful if you know what you are leaving room for. Otherwise, all invitations come looking equally important.

Should short nights accumulate, create more time for sleep. A holiday schedule should also accommodate shift work, caregiving, and individual sleep treatment. Household calendar should reflect real lives lived within it.

Agree upon what follows after the event

The dinner may end at ten, but a sink full of plates may stretch one person’s evening significantly. Imagine the last thirty minutes before planning the event. Who deals with leftovers? Who wipes the table? Who cooks breakfast? The answer determines whether “goodnight” is a goodbye or the beginning of another shift.

Stress & Cortisol Recovery Guide suggests several approaches to asking for sharing one responsibility fully. “Could you handle breakfast, including cooking and clearing it?” is helpful since it will free your hands. You won’t have to think about cooking the next meal while trying to fall asleep.

Inform the other person about the type of food available and the necessary diet. Toast cooked by somebody else can become a very pleasant gesture of affection.

Leave room for different evenings in one household

Under one roof, someone goes to bed while someone starts an exciting evening. Discuss the difference before tiredness makes everybody less diplomatic. “I am going to bed at eleven. Can we reduce the volume of the TV after that?” makes your request clearly understood without forcing the entire household to go to bed.

In multigenerational households, safe lighting and overnight care plans should be considered. Determine who takes care of the response in case something is needed. A quiet bedroom becomes more pleasant to enjoy when responsibilities find another place to go.

Should the living room share the wall with your bed, discuss changing your sleeping place. Houses contain certain habits which cannot be immediately guessed by guests. Inform the other person about what goes through the walls rather than waiting for him/her to find out.

Discuss the first night together the next afternoon. It becomes easier to reach agreement when the sun is shining. Midnight never improved anyone’s negotiation skills.

Pay attention to the late cup that became a habit

Coffee after dessert can become an excuse for staying at the table. The cup can become a reason to linger although you had enough caffeine for the day. Ask for water or for caffeine-free drink if you experience negative impact from caffeine. Decaf coffee also contains caffeine.

Our article Caffeine & Brain Fog explains the connection between the amount of consumed caffeine and its time to consider. Change the drink if you need to while maintaining the discussion. You also should pay attention to alcohol since it can affect your sleep even though it makes you drowsy at the moment.

If you plan to take a sleep supplement or alter your medication, consult a pharmacist or a clinician. Rescheduling tomorrow’s duties will be a better step than expecting a product to make the crowded night acceptable.

Prepare a short version of your evening

At home, your evening can involve reading. After a gathering, you may wash, put away tomorrow’s necessities and go to bed once you are sleepy. Think of closing a familiar shop: attend to what you need, and turn off the lights. Not every shelf has to be arranged before you leave.

Our Everyday Grocery Guide will help you to plan breakfast and the next meal before today’s kitchen shuts down. Knowing what tomorrow will eat leaves you with one question less at nighttime. Oats in the cupboard will become more useful at that hour than a nice idea of breakfast which lacks ingredients.

Should you remain unrefreshed, read our article about brain fog after a whole night of sleep. Problems which persist, loud snoring with gasping and unusual daytime sleepiness require assessment. Arrange another driver whenever you cannot stay alert.

To review the daily patterns that impact your energy, use the Energy Reset Bundle and Action Plan. A successful holiday visit leaves room for tomorrow’s visitors as well. The stories will still be there at breakfast, and you may enjoy them after sleeping.
